Course

Taught by expert, professional Engineers, our two-week course combines the best of Oxford-style teaching with interactive activities and exercises. The small class size means that you will get all the support you need to learn new things and succeed.

When you join the Explore Engineering course, you'll get to:

  • Learn the theory behind core Engineering concepts such as structural analysis, aerodynamics, robotics and more

  • Experience high quality, small group teaching that makes universities like Oxford and Cambridge so popular

  • Meet and learn from young, professional Engineers from Academia or Industry

  • Explore a range of Engineering disciplines and become better informed about the path you may wish to pursue

  • Develop transferable skills that will set you apart from others when applying to universities and any future career

  • Start developing your professional network by connecting with like-minded ambitious students from around the world

Syllabus

Our Explore Engineering course has been carefully designed to ensure that all students learn as much as possible about the various options available to them if they pursue Engineering at university.

This is why we get professionals in each Engineering discipline to speak to you about what the day-to-day is like and how you can pursue that career.

By the end of the course, you will have a clearer idea about whether Engineering is for you, and which specialism interests you the most.

The two-week course is split into ten sessions covering the following:

  1. Introduction to Engineering degrees and careers: Explore what it means to be an Engineer and learn the strategies for success when applying to universities

  2. Mathematics for Engineering: Highlight the fundamental mathematical concepts for Engineering and test your skills with university level problems

  3. Materials Engineering: Learn what makes a material fit for purpose and challenge yourself with some real-life material characterisation

  4. Structural Engineering: What makes a good bridge? Design simple structures and then calculate important values like forces, deformations and support reactions

  5. Computer Science in Engineering: Explore the use of cutting edge technologies such as Machine Learning and Computer Vision to solve Engineering problems

  6. Hydraulics and Pneumatics: What links COVID-19 and a gas gun? Understand the theoretical underpinnings of two of the most widely used Engineering principles

  7. Aeronautics and Astronautics: Learn to fly through the air and space by applying some fundamental Engineering laws

  8. Electrical Engineering: Investigate the application of electricity in some of the greatest Engineering advances ever made

  9. The Business of Engineering: See what makes Engineers great business leaders and compete in a group Business and Engineering challenge

  10. The Future of Engineering: Can you predict the future and prepare for jobs that don't even exist right now?
